The Pattersons' common sense gap.

As you know, we've recently seen a strip that had Annie Nichols and Elly discuss the swingers who write personal ads. When Elly asked Annie if she would see herself as one, Annie replied that she couldn't become one because she'd have to lose twenty pounds. Most people would realize that she was making a self-deprecating and sarcastic remark that really meant "No, Elly, I cannot really conceive of myself as being a swinger"; Elly is not most people. I'd say that she has it in her head that Annie wants to be a party girl because she doesn't understand sarcasm or irony. As I've said before, she, like most of the Pattersaints, doesn't really have the brainpower to get subtle humor. This means that the locals might have whiled away the years playing a nasty little game: "See much bullshit the Foobs will swallow." I'd say that a lot of the stranger things we've seen the Pattersons do and flat-out dumb things they say result from their falling for whatever okeydoke other, more alert Milboroughites tell them. Why else did April think that people actually use words like 'foob' and 'prag' in daily conversation? Why did they take Anthony's claims of mistreatment at face value?
