The Boundary Problem

Every so often, we see that the Pattersons make their lives difficult by not respecting each others’ privacy. As an example, Mike spent most of the first decade of the strip laboring under the delusion that he could barge in and mess with Liz at will. The idea that she had personal space that needed to be respected simply did not occur to him. In his mind, she was the problem because she was trying to put up barriers that he didn’t believe should exist. The source of this strange belief is, of course, his idiot parents. Simply put, they would not tolerate any hindrance on their own right to storm around poking their noses into their kids’ lives. They did squawk like chickens when the kids violated their space, of course, but that was because they were hypocrites as well as being idiot buttinskis. April came closest of all of them to realizing that people had a right to expect a certain amount of privacy; too bad it was because her own had been violated so many times.
