The nothing behind the lines

In Lynn’s letter explaining her decision to drop the weekly letter in favor of a weekly recipe, she reminded us of two things. First, her musing that a monthly letter was a questionable idea shows us that she’s not involved in maintaining (or even viewing) her own homepage and thus palmed off writing the retcons to a flunky. The second thing is that she claims that she has no interest in speculating what the Pattersons do when we’re not looking at them. She compared them to sitcom characters. Her thinking is that since we never saw what happened to the gang down at Central Perk in between episodes, anything could have happened to them. The reason that this is sort of an absurd thing to say is that we know that most people live fairly predictable lives and can be relied on the behave in a certain fashion. We can thus figure out that nine times out of ten John would have a tough day at the office and come home to Elly fuming about some minor catastrophe. The reason it’s sort of a dishonest thing to say is that Lynn ‘knows’ what the Pattersons are supposed to do in their off-time because she created them. Her blithe statement that we, ourselves, can fill in the blanks however we want is a lie; we can have them be whatever we want them to be as long as our guess is exactly like hers.
