Of soaps and other cliches.....

The current story arc has revealed an interesting variation on a familiar refrain by divulging that Elly was a closet day-time drama addict. She simply could not tear herself away from her stories but instead blew an hour cramming bon-bons down her throat transfixed by the improbable adventures of a group of stock characters. This, of course, was so she could make a cliche of herself: the pampered idiot housewife who lazed about the house frittering her time away on nonsense when there was work to be done and moaned about how hard she had it. While other people possessed the will to dare and to do, Elly stood in place chanting her litany of boredom and frustration. The reason for this was simple: Lynn was trying to be all things to all people; not only did she have John-the-ogre running around to irritate the women, she had Elly-the-layabout to appeal to the idiot men who reacted to the women's movement with fear, contempt and disbelief.
