Deliberate Dowdyness in the Pattersphere.

I once mentioned that the Pattersons seem to be firm believers in something called the 'tall poppy syndrome'. This sort of resentment of the more successful comes into play when they wish to deride Mira for wanting more than they think she deserves; their small-minded and hateful suspicion of those around them causes them to fear that a person thus empowered would naturally seek to lord their success over them. This is also why it is that April will resent Becky until she's old and grey and it's why Connie's marriage to Pete imploded. As howtheduck reminded us, Pete was clearly angling himself towards upward mobility and wanted to take Connie with him. She, however, wished to stay true to her dowdy self; she didn't want to be 'better' than the people around her so she did what all 'good' people in the Foobiverse do: become a caricature. Instead of being a real lower-middle-class, salt-of-the-earth type, a Foob knows what the correct thing to do or say is but chooses to do the opposite so he or she can prove that success hasn't made them arrogant. If, for instance, the rich eat like civilized human beings, the Pattersons will eat like savages to 'prove' that they're 'better' people than some rich jerk; this juvenile attempt to feign solidarity with the common man is fairly ridiculous when you realize that we're looking at the Man yelling 'Stick it to the Man.'
