The hidden subtext of Cheapie Weenie Casserole.....

Whatever the reason might be for it, we're seen example after example of Elly trying to prove herself to her mother by keeping her house in what she thinks is the same way she did. I've noticed and explained that, since she's down on herself for no real reason, that she ended up moving the dirt around instead of getting things done like Marian did. One of the things she feels guilty about, sadly, is wanting to do things her own way instead of how she thinks her mother did things. She feels disgusted at herself for not wanting to adopt false economies like shaving sheets, scrubbing attics with toothbrushes and turning leftovers that might no longer be safe to eat into casseroles. Her response to that is either to get snippy and defend her right to do things she'd rather not do or to make stupid jokes about how food she'd rather not eat can be eaten cold.
