Elly's fear of baby-talk......

One of the most infuriating themes that we had to contend with in the Early Years was not John's inability to see that he, without seeing that he was doing it, made Elly feel like a silly, spoiled child. That, although deserving of a slap to the head and an exhortation to wise the Hell up, was as nothing to Elly's antipathy to being in the company of minor children. Ever and always came the complaint that she wasn't being properly stimulated having to listen to and speak to the irrelevant noise and pointless jabbering that her kids made; she wanted to talk to adult people about adult concerns, not bandage skinned knees and comfort bruised egos. This might start to sound like a defense of John's keep-her-home argument but it's not. What it is is a suggestion that John would have done better to hire a qualified nanny and let Elly get a well-paid sinecure to mollify her; he certainly had the money and his children would have been better off in the care of someone kind, patient and attentive.
