It's only bad when they do it: Elly versus children's television.

Remember last year this time when Elly was filled with despair because April planned on texting her when she wanted to be picked up instead of talking on her cell? This looked like a standard rant about the evils of the new technology until Elly realized that she'd forgotten to pass along a passive-aggressive suggestion; she shrugged and nagged the Martian by texting her. This is because technology, like a lot of things, is only bad when other people use it to excess. This is an old, old belief of Elly's; as we were reminded again and again, she needed to get Mike unglued from the tube and playing outside so that she could watch her stories without some kid cramping her style. It didn't matter to her that she could bond with her kids; that's because she didn't really want to; it would, you see, mean that she'd have to reconcile herself to being 'just' a housewife. It would also mean that she'd have to think about other people and we all know she's too petty to do that. It's better to exile the children to the backyard so she can watch Sudden Illness than to identify with them as people instead of a hindrance.
