The Pattersons: Sports Fans R Us.

One of Lynn’s favorite jokes is to depict a Patterson as being a far too enthusiastic audience member at a sporting event. What always happens is that the Foob gets caught up in the moment and rides a wave of adrenaline as his or her team goes through its paces. The conclusion to this is that the Patterson feels spent but happy at his or her victory; this also leads his or her companions to wonder why this exhaustion might be. After all, the Foob was simply watching the game. If he or she were a participant, then all his or her talk about being tired might make some sense. This tells me that Lynn is recording a phenomenon that baffles her. She doesn’t know if it’s a good thing or bad that people can get that worked up about sporting events; what she does know is that it’s not a thing that she does. This is why we never see Elly get into the spirit of the game. Sports are simply not her bag.
