Elly Patterson: Error in the System.

One of the nicest things about the strip that I used to like was that Lynn not only depicted the Pattersons as being flawed but likable people, she also had them acknowledge their flaws and try to transcend them. Elly, for instance, was always wishing she had more patience and understanding so she could avoid scenes with her children that she wished hadn't happened. The old Elly know that it wasn't all her kids' fault that they got into a fight and knew that she had to make a half-hearted apology when the heat died down. Sadly, that tendency disappeared from the strip about nine years ago. The Elly of the Declining Years and New-Ruin era has no such awareness. She does not know that her behavior is part of the problem; this means that her woes thus have no solution. This means we can prepare for more yelling at children and more hurled coffee mugs.
