Acting single explained.

As we all know, Lynn seems to have a rather skewed view of how people behave; one of her more irritating beliefs is that single women represent a threat to the sanctity of every marriage in their community simply by existing. This is because, of course, she believes that women cannot have identities of their own; they instead can only exist as an adjunct to a man. Elly, for instance, is Jim's daughter, John's wife, Mike's mother, Anthony's mother-in-law and so on and so forth; she is most assuredly not Elly, autonomous life form. Being a woman makes that impossible as far as Lynn is concerned. This means that a single woman must be trying to wreck some married woman's home by seducing her husband, destroying her marriage and having her cast out onto the street with nothing. The things that confuse us are easy to understand when we remember how paranoid and old=fashioned Lynn is. Connie represents a threat that must be neutralized because she suggests to a rigid mind that the world is not hers to control.
