Elly and human contact.

One of the themes that was almost true-to-life in the Early Years was Elly's need to be exposed to adult conversation once in a while. Like all children Mike and Lizzie need a lot of attention and are always touching things and getting in her grill so she'd like some me-time and a chance to see the wider world. Also, she has to defend that need to an uncomprehending and unsympathetic husband. Unfortunately, Elly isn't like most housewives. She doesn't want to go on playdates with other mothers to have a swell time doing things, creating friendships and bonding with the offsprings; she wants to go to her friends' houses and talk smack about people who are absent. She also is abnormal because she says that by doing so, she's talking to human beings for a change. This means that she doesn't think of the small ones as being human; they're pretty much blobs of ungrateful flesh until they're out of high school and beaten down enough to let her own their horses.
