Freedom's just another word for overwork......

One of the oddest things about life with the Pattersons is seeing how ready the mothers are to palm the burden of child-raising off on someone else while they work long hours at a job that Lynn considers to be defeminizing only to come home, do a bunch of housework and not be appreciated or substantively assisted by whining idiot husbands who cower behind a newspaper rather than interact with the odd little pseudohumans called 'children'. Like Deanna would twenty-five years later, Elly seems to think that this sort of insane drving herself into the ground represents a brief and glorious taste of freedom from the crushing inevitability of the otherwise-inescapable horrors of motherhood. I'd mind the non-stop ranting about how she and Dee need to make their mark less if it were not accompanied by the premise that being a mother is supposed to be as inhumanly difficult as Lynn thinks it is.
