The clothing wars.....

It might seem as if I've exhausted all the annoying possibilities that Elly has to suck as a wife and mother but I haven't; there is, as an example, her need to control what her family wears in public. She, who dresses extra-dowdy because of her odd belief that looking twenty or thirty years older than she actually is at any given point in time will make people take her seriously, is transfixed by the notion that what her husband and children wear will be a reflection on her. John, while not able to resist her needling and wheedling about how oddly he dresses forever, is at least able to give as good as he gets; the children aren't nearly so lucky. Their agony is increased because Elly seems to be one of those parents who make a point of not seeing that what her children wear matters; this leads to her baffled frown when they come home and yell that since they aren't wearing the latest style, they're getting picked on by the cool kids. Since she has nothing in the tank advice-wise and can't seem to remember her own playground experience, Mike and Lizzie can't even say "At least my Mom thinks I'm cool." This is sort of a shame because there are good reasons to avoid peer pressure; too bad, as I said, that Elly doesn't seem to know what they are.
