Lynn Johnston and the Grammar Police.

An annoying trend in the strip is the use of bad grammar by people Lynn doesn't want us to like or are doing things she thinks they shouldn't. There isn't a day that goes by without somebody's dialogue having an "an'" in it: "An'I blah, blah, blah". We also have her objection to the American pronunciation of the word 'stupid'. I remember April's dialogue used to be loaded with the spelling 'stoopid', so as to hang a lampshade on the fact that the Martian could not speak English correctly. You, of course, derive from this the conclusion that she thinks that the English language is the property of an elite with inviolable laws that people of good will must obey, lest they be thought a member of the armies of darkness who would sully and destroy it in their ignorant malice. That, or her vindictive drunk of a mother told her she spoke horrible English whilst wailing on her.
