The driving of the wedge

The horrible train wreck that is the Phil and Connie show is, it's safe to say, bad enough as it is. As we've seen, Phil is approaching things from the perspective of a thirty-year old man who expects that Connie will act her age and not like the jumped-up, marriage-obsessed case of arrested development we see. The intimations that she's not simply going to be friends that he gets from time to time alarm him. Since both people want different things and are too stubborn to budge, it's obvious that we'd end up looking at an appalling mess that left both people worse off than they were before they met. Were most of us in Elly's shoes, our reaction to this whole ungodly mess would be the sickened realization that no matter how things blew to bits, our intimate connection to both parties meant that we'd be stuck picking up the pieces and thus steel ourselves to be a shoulder to cry on. Elly doesn't look worried though; she looks almost thrilled that Connie is about to humiliate herself. That's she anticipates a glorious future of feeling better about herself as she chants "I told you so" to a sad, desperate woman who is vulnerable and easy prey to shallow dolts as well as to making a fool of herself by chasing after the unwilling. She does the same horrible thing when Ted dumps Connie 'cause he got bored with her and worried that he'd have to settle down. As I said once, the joy with which Elly seems to greet Connie's reverses is one of the reasons that Connie decided she'd needed to leave for greener pastures; once things had died down and she no longer had to worry about Elly messing up her life for kicks, she returned to Milborough in a sort of triumph.
