Foobocaust Five: Elly implodes.

Given what we know about Liz, I'm pretty confident something like my scenario would cause her to act out. She's sort of got a tenuous hold on reality as it is and a shock to the system like that might shove her over the edge into full blown madness. She might, for instance, vent her spleen at Meredith, the Designated Survivor of my timeline, and blame her for all this. That's sad, but at least she'd be doing something. Elly, on the other hand, would be totally blown to bits by something like this. Previous generations were forced to steel themselves to the possiblity of outliving a child, you see. Hell, even her Dad is aware of the possibilty he might have outlived one of his kids. Elly, on the other hand, is part of a generation that rarely dealt with the reality of child mortality. Since she probably grew up thinking they were all supposed to outlive her, having her nose rubbed in the fact that all her certainties were so much rubbish would be too much for her to cope with. As we have seen, her repsonse to serious problems is to curl up in a ball and die. She'd be so focused on her own grief to be any help to anyone else, let alone be there for Merrie. As a matter of fact, she might join Liz in making the kid feel guilty for surviving.
