The hidden message behind the Pattersons' love affair with overalls

As we've seen, the Pattersons seem to love putting children under the age of two or so in overalls; the sight of Lizzie toddling around or clinging to Elly's side while wearing the pink overalls with the ruffles on the shoulder is almost reassuring in its infuriating familiarity. The problem most people have with seeing them is that they realize that it makes changing the child somewhat difficult. Not only are they less manageable than pants with an elastic waistband, the fact that being motionless is a learned behavior must also be taken into consideration. This reveals one of two uncomfortable truths about the real-life children involved. Either Lynn actually struggled with them in an attempt to martyr herself like Elly does or she rarely changed her own children. It wouldn't be a big stretch to assume that Lynn had someone to help with raising her children while she was coming up with story ideas and such so she might not realize that, although 'cute', the clothing she prefers to see on children is somewhat lacking in practicality.
