Same Face, New Name.

In an earlier post, I'd commented on the fact that whenever the kids wanted Elly to drop whatever she was doing and have fun, her reaction was an expression I call the Squished-Up Face of Rage: she narrows her eyes in an enraged frown, her jaw sets and it seems that her turnip nose is the only thing keeping her face from caving in on itself. At the time, I thought that it was simply because she was too big a damned deal to be bothered playing with the kids. Recent events have convinced me that it goes much deeper; it seems to me that said expression comes not from a mere desire to not be lowered to playing kid's games and wanting to talk about what kids like. What seems to drive the anger is that her children want her to be a presence in their lives; since she hates her children for being children, she wants to escape her responsibilities and live in a castle in the air. The merest reminder that this isn't going to happen is seen as a cruel, hateful and, above all, unfair imposition. Her face thus says "Look at me! Look at me! No one in the history of the world has suffered as much as I have and no one ever will!". This requires that we modify the name of the expression to the Squished-Up Face of MARTYRED Rage. The fact that it always appears in a situation where a normal person would admit that she should, in fact, have been paying closer attention to what's going on around her instead of sitting on her rump feeling sorry for herself only serves to make it all the more disgusting to look at.
