John and the kids: the fashion victimized.

It's sort of bad enough that Elly started dressing like Grandma Moses shortly after April was born; I could deal with that if she didn't make so much noise about how the rest of the family dressed. I'm not just talking about how she warred against John's questionable taste in clothing, of course; we also have to contend with her need to micro-manage her female children's wardrobe. In both instances, she seems to believe that the neighbors will blame her for how her family looks. I can sort of sympathize with her wanting John to look his best and wanting Liz and April to not be judged by the way they dress; what I can't relate to is her being such a vindictive jerk about it. She not only seems to believe that John used to dress like a goof to oppress her, our friendly neighborhood covert pervert conflates the modern styles her children want with the attire of pole dancers. The only good thing about her panic and hidden perversion is the end result: since the fashion statement Liz and April end up making is "Look at us; we blend in with the crowd like the good little sheeple we are", they wear the sort of clothing that expresses their real nature. John simply goes along with Elly's desires to make his daughters dress conservatively because he's their father and that's his job. Mike fits into this, of course, by not wanting to wear 'dorky' winter clothing and trying to freak Elly out by wearing a beard, both of which he lost when prospective employers told him to.
