Meet the new olds, not the same as the old olds.

In the year 2020, one would suppose that John and Elly would be in much the same situation that Jim and Miriam were when they were roughly seventy. As you recall, Miriam was pretty much on her last legs at that point so I would assume that ol'SheetShaver would be staring down the barrel of something she never ever thought would happen: life on her own. Sure, Jim was sad, heartbroken even, after his wife passed but he knew life was still worth living. Elly, on the other hand, has no such reserves of wisdom and inner peace to draw on. I would assume that within a year of John's death, two at the most, Elly would join him because she lost her will to live.
