Title Nine and the Stones.

One of the more interesting things about the strip is the love-hate relationship Val and Joan have with competitive sports; the problem is that, well, they happen to be competitive. They like the idea of having Alix and Holly getting exercise, bonding with teammates and not bowing to the keep'em in the kitchen vibe that a lot of the loonier coaches give off. I get the impression that they don't care for the idea that there have to be winners and losers in a competition; if everyone could bask in the glow of victory, the last vestige of jock culture would thus fade away. This leads us to why Joan made a long, awkward speech about the Organized Festival Of Barbarism that is the Superbowk; her rant was less against the event or that it ate up a Sunday afternoon and more about how she disliked football players and cheerleaders.
