Kim: the third of three.

We now come to Kim so that we may see which aspect of Elly's personality she embodies. Given that a lot of the conflict in her life is owing to her step-son's absorption with pop culture phenomena and electronic gadgetry, we can safely assign to her that component of Elly that quivers with fear and rage when confronted with big, scary machines and bad information. We also must contend with her having to transit from columnist to step-mother and thus have her occasionally wondering if exposure to an active pre-teen will, as Elly always feared, cause her brain to atrophy from lack of use. It's a good thing for her that she has friends to talk to and that, like her creator, she is aware of her own tendency towards being silly. In an ideal world, Lynn would have retired ages ago and deeded some of her characters to Sandra so that they too might evolve into more pleasant company; as it stands, what we have is something in between Cathy and Foob.
