On the mothers of the four-panel world.

The problem with discussing child safety at any great length is that one ends up being accused of hating children by one set of well-meaning extremists who've made a false god of childhood on one hand while being accused of being a member of the first group of loons by another set of extremists. Neither side wants to acknowledge anything like the reign of common sense parenting because the media men don't like rational arguments based on a clear-eyed assessment of the facts; screaming yahoos make for better TV, you see. They also make a life and living flattering the people they stampede into making foolish decisions based on wild conjecture, exaggerated fears of the unknown, peer pressure and vanity. This is why so many comic strips feature as a central character the All-Wise, All-Knowing, All-Loving, Hyper-competent Mother who fights a never-ending battle to prevent her misguided offspring and foolish husband from having Big-But-Dangerous-Fun. The specimen case of this is Andrea Fox from Amend's Foxtrot; no matter what it is that the kids want, she's convinced that it's bad for them and must be kept from their reach lest Chaos and One Night fall upon them. Granted, Amend shows us the reason why this is (she wants to show her less up-her-own-ass mother that she knows she's doing and that all the studies that she's read aren't bumf) but few others do; for every Sally Forth whose insanity is manifest, there are an army of Connie Duncans who are presented as being perfect.
