Cathy Guisewite, Jedi Knight.

As we’re about to see, the last week of the comic strip Cathy has the title character explain to a somewhat baffled Irving that her link to her creator allows her to see into their mutual future; this sort of Shape of Aaaaaaaaacks to Come arrangement is similar to Lynn Johnston’s fabled Strip of Destiny and the sort of vision of the future Teena Keene had in the last week of Alison Burrows’s PreTeena. The problem I have with this is not that Guisewite chose to end the strip this way. It’s her choice to have us part company with her tiresome-but-essentially-likable author avatar on a bit of an up note. The problem is that she told a flat-out lie when she said in an interview that she had no idea how things would end. That’s because she, unlike Johnston, uses a script to write her strip; she doesn’t simply come up with a punchline and work backwards because she cares enough to have a firm idea of where her plot is headed. Since she thus knows how she wants her strip to end, to say that she’s as baffled as we are is, at the very least, disingenuous. If pressed, I should think that she’d probably point to the fact that Cathy’s future is not being depicted in the detail we’re accustomed to seeing as her motive for saying what she did; therefore, her saying that she has no idea of how things will end is true from a certain point of view. Simply put, she’s using a Jedi truth to reconcile her public statements with objective reality.
