Shaggy: the Dog-food Eating Hippie and his discontents.

As some people might remember, Norville 'Shaggy' Rogers started out as a mildly-affectionate parody of Maynard G Krebs, Dobie Gillis's beatnik sidekick; like him, Shaggy had the somewhat-offputting habit of using the word 'like' out of context. To paraphrase Harlan Ellison, it would have been less annoying were he to use the word in its proper setting and not as filler that, like, seems to show up, like, every third word or, like, so. He also had (and still has) a stronger instinct of self-preservation than the other three human members of Mystery Inc; what he lacks in courage, stamina and brains, he makes up for in velocity. This means that he can usually outrun the costumed nutjob Fred sends him and Scooby out to taunt so as to lure him or her into the defective trap meant to contain the baddie of the week. The means by which Fred and Velma over-ride his inclination to be anywhere but in range of the rubber mask brigade is by appealing to his love of food; the walking, talking drug reference will usually compete with Scooby to see who gets the Scooby Snack. The one almost-reassuring thing about the latest version is that he's slightly more mature than the jerks that surround him; while it sort of depressed him to have to shut Velma down, she'd sort of walked into the disastrous rejection he'd had to subject her to. He knows that being jealous of a dog, even one that can talk, is sort of nuts and someone who'd be that way is someone who's not mature enough to date.
