What was really great about Marian....

As josephusrex said, most of what's wrong with Elly can be summed up by one word: "Marian". Elly tries to keep her house, cook her meals and raise her children like her mother did and it's making her a basket case. This is owing, I should think, to an oversight on Marian's part; she was so anxious about what the people in her community thought of her, she passed down to her immature, slow-witted, panicky and literal-minded daughter an obsession that didn't suit the world she'd end up living in. She also seems to not have realized exactly how immature, slow-witted, panicky or literal-minded her child was owing to said pre-occupation with what the neighbors might think; she also seems to have not noticed something else that she, Phil and Jim didn't share with Elly: the ability to laugh at herself. Despite being houseproud and no real fan of chaos, Marian knew at some level or another that she was being absurd; what she didn't know, what made her great, was her inability to see that Elly took everything far more seriously than she was supposed to. Since her contribution was her lack of awareness that Elly felt overwhelmed by her example, she spent most of her life wondering why her child did all the crazy and stupid things she did.
