John: How he’s perceived.

As we’ve seen, John is a smug, deeply-misogynist imbecile with a strong need to control the people around him, no self-awareness or empathy and, since he twists every fact that comes his way so as to make things fit his simplistic and obsolete world-view, hopelessly ignorant. His idiotically assuming that Therese was solely to blame for the collapse of her marriage because she wanted to keep Anthony from having a home tells us that he’s learned exactly nothing from watching his wife feel overwhelmed by the demands of family life and God-damned proud of it. His sadistic mistreatment of April for not being a ‘real little girl’ (what we would call a submissive little doll-creature pathetically eager to subordinate her own needs to that of someone who possesses a Y chromosome and is thus fit to decide What Should Be) compounds the folly he has of exiling his children to his sister’s farm when they start to show signs of becoming individuals. What makes this repulsive clown especially disgusting is that he seems to think that he’s regarded as a figure of respect in the community. Just as Elly doesn’t realize that she’s regarded as a tiresome bore, lousy parent and dimwitted gadfly, John has no real notion that he too is regarded as a joke. To start with, I should think that most people think that Gordon would have done better to ask the Mob for seed money as they’d be significantly less intrusive business partners. We also have to contend with his habit of walking around in public looking like a complete imbecile in his old-time engineer get-up and public knowledge that he moved his wife and child to the Stibbs place so he could play with toys. It’s not much of a stretch of the imagination to see why no one in the neighborhood will come and play with him; who needs to be around a grinning ignoramus who can’t and won’t think?
