The Honeymoon Complex...

The interesting thing about January 1982 is that we got to see the first of the many child-free vacations that John and Elly went on over the years. Given that Elly stood around bleating that she and John never went on a real honeymoon, it seems to me that what they're doing is parking the kids with a friend so that they can pretend that they're young newlyweds who don't worry about kids, careers, mortgages and all the other stuff that preoccupies their minds. The problem, of course, is that they don't quite manage to escape themselves; what happens is that they always start off on an awkward note when they have to part with their children. My sympathy for them turns into a snarl when I remember that they resent the fact that their children have separation issues; you can just tell that on the flight down, both of them are grumbling about the spoiled children who want to make them feel guilty about doing what they want to for a change. Try as they might to not let their inability to constructively deal with guilt spoil things, sooner or later, remorse intrudes, they think of home and what was a honeymoon becomes a temporary reprieve from their offsprings. If they were the sort to not let guilt warp their thinking, they'd have had a swell belated honeymoon and gotten the impulse to fly South looking for something that they can't define out of their systems.
