Clutter, the next generation.

The problem with growing up in the Pattermanse is that Mike and Liz have ended up with the foolish idea that Elly's values are somehow normal and good. The chiefest example of this is the foolish and selfish manner in which Liz treated Jim's harmonica. As you will recall, April entrusted her with it after Liz had made a vague statement about wishing she'd kept up with her piano lessons; what she couldn't have known was that Jesse would steal the thing in order to more or less pay Liz back for ditching Mtigwaki or that Liz would let him keep it because his act of theft flattered her. She should have, though; that's because Liz had internalized Elly's need to be the final arbiter of what's precious in the world. Since Jim's keepsake had no real value to her, April was being a big picky-face about nothing she'd admit to. This is also why the Pattermanse still has pretty much the same furniture that John and Elly abandoned; simply put, Mike can't part with Elly's ugly couch or hideous wallpaper. Given that Deanna and Anthony have made false gods of two rather petty annoyances, there's not going to be a John or Jim around to resist the need to make holy relics of the tawdry crap Elly witlessly salted away. Hell, they might even put up that ugly-ass carving up on the mantel.
