Mike's own personal fin: roadside isn't just for sex.

As we all know, Mike was a couple of hundred kilometers away from the river that day twelve years ago. He wasn't really party to Elly's huffy bafflement at the suggestion that if a small, helpless child can open a gate and wander around loose, immediate steps should be taken to correct that nor the inevitable mess resulting from her inaction. He had to hear over the phone that his baby sister nearly drowned. Since he had no real idea (and, as far as I know, still doesn't) why it had been allowed to happen, he'd buy into Elly's bullshit story about it being a horrible fluke. It would only affect him in so far as he were willing to admit to his own fantasies of wishing a younger sibling away. He wouldn't own up to that, of course, because that would be, you know, wrong. It took him a bit later to join his family denying uncomfortable facts. His escape from reality was touched off by his witnessing of another accident: Deanna's car wreck. He let his guilt over his initial lack of empathy turn Deanna into something she wasn't: a helpless victim of a domineering mother. For the last ten years, he's tried to deny the evidence that Deanna is using him as a pawn in some sort of head game she's got going with Mommy. The result, of course, is the sniveling old woman you see today.
