The Valley Voice....

Another of the things we can look forward to in the coming months is the first appearance of the Valley Voice in the strip. As we all may or may not know, it's a locally-published newspaper that covers the comings and goings of the people of Milborough; as such, it's a sort of tribute to the small town newspaper that used to be a fixture of life in rural and suburban Canada. The interesting thing is not that Elly comes across a shoestring operation like the one Mrs Walsh is running and can't figure out that the woman can't really afford to pay her; the interesting thing is that she talks a great game about being assertive but sort of chokes the second the woman tries to change the subject. A more aware person would clue in to she meant by 'but-you're-being-published' and do what she needs to do; Elly stands there with her face frozen in confusion and lets herself get talked into doing what she doesn't want to. Eventually, though, things do get better; that's because the column she writes about the library gets her the first job she blames April for making her lose.
