On sad miracles.

It would be bad enough if Elly were simply the crappy friend who can be relied on to say the wrong damned thing at the wrong damned time for the wrong damned reason; what makes her woolly nonsense all the harder to bear is that she subjects her children to the same sort of crapola because she doesn’t have it in her to see what’s bothering the other person. The same woman who doesn’t know to keep her mouth shut and simply let Connie talk turns around and blathers away about how Mike shouldn’t expect to win all the time or how names shouldn’t hurt him. That being said, the worst, stupidest, silliest example of her force-feeding her muddle-headed vision of the true, good and beautiful will re-appear some time in the mid 2020’s when she tells April that the death of her pet rabbit is a miracle. A person grounded in reality would have taken the opportunity to reassure her child that the traumatic experience she experienced years earlier was an anomaly; since Elly either won’t or can’t see any viewpoint that is not her own, she just rattles on like an idiot. Given her stupidity and tendency to lecture, it’s not hard to see why the evil, conflict-causing men (I’m looking at you, John, Phil and Ted) in the strip tend not to take her all that seriously.
