On the thickening of skin...

As we all know, the only answer John and Elly seem to want to give their children when they're being teased is a variation on the theme "Sticks and stones." What they, of course, mean is that instead of wanting to live in a world wherein Man studies bullying no more, the children should instead strive to become utterly indifferent to teasing. The problem, of course, is that this sort of nonsense is not only guaranteed to fail to solve the problem, it's also a sure means of making things worse. Not only are the Pattersons hypocrites who visibly over-react to the sort of verbal abuse they tell their kids to ignore, they seem to not realize that their children distort their stiff upper lip philosophy. We not only have to contend with, say, Mike feeling guilty because he responds like a human being instead of a robot, we also have him thinking "Well, Lizzie shouldn't object to being called Lizardbreath because she's not supposed to." What makes things all the worse is that Mike is probably currently spouting the same ridiculous, demeaning platitudes that failed him.
