Platitude Failure Two: Electric Boogaloo

You'll notice that I ended yesterday's entry with the adjective "demeaning" qualifying the noun "platitude"; that's because it's fairly clear that Elly and John react to their children's problems with the attitude "How do I get this small person to shut up about his or her meaningless problems?" It doesn't matter what the trouble is, the adults in the strip come into things with the disastrous, counter-productive and immoral presumption that nothing that happens in childhood matters or has any lasting effect. The end result, of course, is that we end up with adults that need to be constantly reminded that bad things happen to other people owing to their lunatic misapprehension that everyone else everywhere is having a much better time than they are; this, of course, is owing to a feeling of isolation and the odd belief that no one else is listening or taking them seriously.
