On being pregnant all over......

The recent strips in which Elly shared Lynn's envy of Anne's not 'looking' pregnant remind us that both women tend not to realize that craving food is is a normal, healthy part of of life and not, as Lynn thinks, a sign of weakness or loss of control. The problem, of course, is that it's very difficult to try to convince Elly of anything; that's because she'd far rather be wrong about something and desperately unhappy about it than suffer the loss of face implicit on having to admit that she doesn't know what she's talking about. When told, for instance, she doesn't actually have to worry about putting on weight because she's on the slender side, she interprets questioning her belief that she's always ten pounds over her ideal weight as being a cruel attempt to deny her the right to express herself. This belief that she's dangerously overweight when she's not tends to blind her to the fact that Annie probably spent most of her pregnancy sick with fear that her second child would not have the best start in life or that she might not survive the delivery because she was dangerously underweight; that's because there's no such word in the dictionary in Elly's (and Lynn's) head.
