Second-generation jerkassery

A recent Lynnsight in which Lynn revealed that she has a hard time taking compliments at face value tends to explain a lot of the more mystifying aspects of Elly's personality. Since she herself was a bully who lived to torment people, she expects to be repaid in kind by everyone in sight; the notion that someone (John, for instance) would use an endearment without it being a reflection on her is not one that does or can occur to her. It also helps to explain why she mever thanks people or compliments them on a job well done. Not only does she not want them to get swelled heads, she doesn't feel comfortable praising people. The end result, of course, is that she stands around like an idiot wondering why Mike and the kids never thank her and why they spend their days insulting one another. After all, it would never occur to her that most of the problems in her life are the result of her own character flaws any more than it would that Mike, April and Liz have to be shown what good manners and gracious behavior are in order to be able to fit in with the rest of society. Were someone like Mira to come along and tell her that her children don't thank people or pay them sincere compliments because they learned from her bad example, she'd huff and puff about how little sense that makes.
