Fear of a painted planet.

As we've seen in the past, Jim tended to be somewhat uncomfortable with changes in social norms that possibly imply that the sureties he mistakenly believed to be eternal were unjust, contrary to objective reality and relatively new. He had to believe that certain behaviors would lead to the collapse of society or face the grim possibility that that he'd wasted his life and idiotically added to Elly's burdens by chasing after and worshiping sundry loads of old bollocks that he was a fool to pay obeisance to. This, of course, stems from his being a relatively accurate portrait of Lynn's father; his need to defend the social system he grew up in at all costs while demonizing deviants seems to have born bitter fruit. That's because what those of you who haven't been following the Foobiverse that closely probably don't know is that forworse found out something fairly interesting about Lynn; it seems that she's got an aunt on her mother's side of the family who she's never met. What's more, her aunt Unity is a well-known artist whose talents might have influenced or shaped Lynn's style for the better had her parents not made a point of "saving" her from "ruination" and the horrors of not marrying the first idiot she kissed and popping out young'uns before she was ready for either. From what Lynn herself shared, it seems that her parents sort of resented the woman's unconventional lifestyle and feared that they too would know the 'shame' of being saddled with a bohemian "wasting" her life "chasing a shiny illusion." This sounds familiar, doesn't it? It sounds like the bullshit John tells April about how Becky can't possibly be happy and the canting nonsense Elly spouts about Phil. My guess is that Lynn's need to lick the boots that kicked her gave her a warped idea of what a career in the arts is all about.
