Awful people or awful writing? You be the judge.

While scanning one of the threads on 'Comics Curmudgeon' Sunday, I found a link to an essay by Mark Twain listing James Fenimore Cooper's violations of the laws of basic storytelling. It amazed and horrified me how similar his complaints about a nineteenth-cetury author reminded me of the reasons people give for disliking For Better or For Worse. Number Six, which states that if a character is described as having certain attributes, his dialogue and actions should justify said descrpition, has been ignored so many times as to make us anticipate the next assassination of sanity. Since Lynn can't write a coherent story with believable characters anymore, what started out as the realistic saga of flawed but decent suburbanites has become a chronicle of the unbelievable feats of moral monsters.
