On being lectured to....

Given how self-absorbed and silly Elly is, it would stand to reason that while she arrogates to herself the right to preach to everyone within a five-mile radius, she probably cannot tolerate the least hint that she could stand to do things differently. Fortunately for us, Lynn obliges us with rock-solid proof of that speculation; the same woman who jabs her fingers in the air while ranting like a brain-dead maniac about how everyone wants to treat her like a servant because they hate her gets even more sullen and hostile when someone shows her a better, more efficient way of doing things. That's because of her inability to figure out why this is; a less self-centered, more positive human being would see themselves as being the cautious recipient of a good-natured attempt to help her. Given that Elly is the creation of a sullen wacko who thinks teachers are evil, puppy-eating Nazi space monsters who want to tell her that she doesn't actually know what she's doing when she's always right because they want to destroy her freedom of expression and make her a robot, her reaction to being taught is exactly the same as her children's: angry, sullen defiance combined with a need to malign the person helping her. It's not that Elly is doing things the wrong way for stupid reasons, it's that extra-bad people want to make her feel old, useless and stupid. John differs from her only in that he ascribes this need to the desire haters have to contradict what everyone is supposed to know; it's not about him being a stubborn old fossil who's too chickenshit to question the opinions he locked into his brain when he was six, it's that crazy people want him to be crazy too.
