On F-days and M-days......

As we've seen, Mother's Day seems to be mostly about how Elly cannot really relax even on a day dedicated to her societal niche; on those occasions when her innate need to do something just to feel worth breathing doesn't spoil things, her family's confusing that with liking to slave away or John's hapless inability to figure out what she wants mucks things up. This tends to make Mother's Day a rather mixed blessing.

Something which amplifies her discontent is that John looks to her to have a much better deal on his special day; he, for instance, seems to actually look forward to doing work around the house, isn't imposed on nearly so much and ends up looking a lot happier. The problem, of course, is that he feels that she has things a lot easier; this is more or less the way their whole marriage has run, come to think of it.
