Elly Patterson and other dilettantes.

One thing that I have noticed about Elly is her tendency towards sporadic interest in her enthusiasms accompanied by an exaggeration of how dedicated she is to goals she only intermittently pursues. The example that I gave last time that I covered this trend was her dubious dedication to post-secondary education; as we've seen and will see, she doesn't really know what she wants to do, does everything in fits and starts but boasts about how great a scholar she actually isn't.

The same tendency comes into play when it comes to shedding those ten pounds that only exist inside her self-loathing mind; since she won't admit that she's thin and tends to gravitate toward clothing styles that do not cover her frame in a flattering manner, she suffers under the delusion that she's as round as a pumpkin. This spurs her towards adopting two habits that irritate those around her. First is her embracing what she thinks is a vegan diet; since her mind came to a complete stop about the same time that Sputnik 1 was launched, this means subsisting on lettuce and making excuses to cheat that would shame Cathy Guisewite's avatar. The second is her non-existent commitment to getting in shape; either she goes to the gym every once in a while to feel put-upon by all the people who take better care of themselves or she jogs to the donut shop to gorge herself because she ran for the impossible distance of A MILE AND A HALF!!

This even extends to her being a parent; sure, she likes the attention she gets from other women in her community but at the end of the day, their concerns are beneath her and she has to do important things like laundry, gossipping about whatever friend isn't present at the time and watching her stories so that dull chore is farmed out to an offspring who needs to earn his keep.
