Elly and the volatile moods of toddlers.....

One thing pretty much all of us can rely on is that whatever a child the age Lizzie is supposed to be when Elly is angsting about leaving her at daycare is is that whatever she's feeling at any particular moment, she won't be feeling it for very long or clearly remember that she was feeling that particular emotion. Almost all of us have marveled that a little girl can howl in rage and pain for what seems like an eternity one second and be all smiles the next; what's more, whatever upset the child in the first place has been quite forgotten.

Too bad for Mike, Elizabeth and April that they're the children of a woman who doesn't understand any of this and resists having the fact explained to her. Since she can't remember the past and assumes that whatever situation she's currently in will persist forever, she feels compelled to not only let the oh-so-temporary crankiness of a small child get her down but to dwell on said bad mood for hours on end.

The end result is that whenever Mike, Lizzie or April see her in one of her foul moods, they assume that whatever is wrong must be somehow their fault and go right back to feeling upset again. This means that Elly's inability to remember the past and tendency to view herself as being the center of the universe has created what could be called a perpetual-emotion machine.
