Lynn, alcohol and the university experience.

As you might or might not know, howtheduck had, in the process of commenting on the degeneration of the strip into the worship of Anthony Caine, been told by reliable sources that Rod Johnston was not one to indulge overly much at all when it came to alcohol. It would seem that much like your not-at-all humble servant, beer generally tells him that he cannot stand up and is right to do so.

The reason that this unremarkable fact is being remarked on is that by not drinking, he's a walking, talking contradiction of one of the stereotypes that dominate Lynn's thinking. Simply put, she's convinced herself that the instant a young man or woman is no longer under parental supervision, they drink themselves sick; Rod's telling her otherwise is not believed even to this day because she knows the truthiness and isn't going to let his lyingness convince her.

This odd belief of hers that university kids are never sober shines through during Mike and Liz's college days. To a casual observer, it looks as if we're looking at a couple of young people with serious drinking problems but to Lynn, Mike and Lizzie's drinking themselves sick is normal and good because, hum, that's the deal, okay?
