The closed mind and the yearning for contact.....Elly's dilemma.

Remember back when Elly was defending a lying thief and telling April that it was very hard to believe that someone who actually flattered her was only doing so to take advantage of her bottomless need for approbation? One of the lines that was supposed to make April look bad was her knowing going in that Elly would be almost impossible to convince. The problem, of course, is that Elly is almost impossible to reason with when she's got her mind made up.

We've already seen that come into play this year when Elly refused to talk to John lest she have to listen to reason, admit that she didn't have her facts straight and thus suffer the humiliation of being corrected like she was a weak, useless child instead of a powerful adult who can believe what she wants to regardless of whether it's true.

The problem, as I've said before, is that she also wants her children to come to her with their problems so that she can dish out advince. Since even someone as dim as Michael or Elizabeth can see that the instant they do so, she'll inevitably misunderstand the question, focus on a side issue or simply blow them off because said problem gives her the screaming habdabs because it's about the icky, horrible sex that scares her because it brings the forbidden quantum of pleasure into her life, she'll spend her days not knowing why people avoid the emotional minefield she surrounds herself with.
