My Little Breadhead: Payment is Magic......

One of the reasons that John and Elly argued at cross-purposes for so very long was his inability to understand one basic fact about the woman he married: her belief that being paid nothing made her a nothing. As tight-assed and as entitled as John is, even he can see the worth of people who expect nothing in return for what they do but that's more than Elly ever could. This is why he never really understood what her problem was with being a stay at home mother. To him, she was doing the valuable job of raising the next generation of boring idiot white people; to her, she was simply occupying space and being worthless because she didn't have a paycheck and public recognition. This is also why she felt that the Valley Voice was exploiting her and treating her like a worthless child instead of treating her like a useful adult and paying her. Her inability to understand that Mrs Walsh couldn't pay her or that she could easily have found another job elsewhere made for an annoying exercise in whining.

That being said, it's not hard to see why she hates April so much. It seems to her that her attempts to forge an identity for herself are constantly being destroyed by the selfishness of a Martian who insists on getting in the way of her being recognized.
