Farley: Image versus reality

The point of an upcoming arc is that Elly can't rely on Farley to be the sort of fearless guard dog television has led her to expect him to be. Instead of his bravely defending her from whatever imaginary threats that faced them, the Pattersons often had to find themselves dealing with a freaked-out pet shivering in terror. This, I should think, is symptomatic of the foolhardiness involved in bringing him into their lives in the first place. As you will recall, the whole thing started because John bought into the whole 'a pet will teach my son responsibility' bullshit without thinking of any sort of downside. Said downside has to do with the fact that the person who ended up taking care of him was too busy trying to talk him into doing things to train him and certainly didn't see that her silliness was the cause of most of his less desirable traits. What's worse is that despite having a small-animal vet as a sister-in-law, Lynn still treated some of the more horrible things done to the poor creature as innocent fun. Oh, yeah. I was laughing my head off when he got sick from eating garbage, busting a gut when he ended up at the pound and really yukking it up when he had a heart attack.
