Beach Blanket Elly

I think it's fairly safe to say that Elly is somewhat anxious about her looks. We are, after all, dealing with a woman capable of being very pissed off when she's reminded that she looks like one of AMC's Walking Dead at the wee small hours of the morning. This same anxiety, vanity and negativity come into play whenever the woman goes to the beach. We know enough about her to realize that she's extremely self-conscious, filled with self-loathing and convinced that she's being judged harshly by those who regard her not as the hideous wreck she needs to see herself as but as yet another poor woman suffering from a lousy self-image. Since she's not especially gifted with self-awareness, she needs to find an external cause for her failure to get an article of clothing to fill the yawning psychic void where her self-confidence was meant to be. Luckily for her, she notices something that she hates because she doesn't understand it: the fact that most men aren't constantly hovering around a mirror trying to make themselves look less hideous. This tells her that, as always, men are responsible for her innate inability to be happy with herself. It's not that she's genetically programmed to hate what she sees, it's men and children making her life bad.
