Martha, Exile Farm and Wild-(m)ass guesses.

As we all know, Mike spent most of the autumn after his trip to Exile Farm acting all wounded and suspicious because Martha never wrote to him. The excuse she gave him about how he was such a better writer than he was that she felt as if any letter she wrote couldn't measure up seems to me to have been designed primarily to flatter the nerdheaded little dustball into getting his head out of his ass. Needless to say, it didn't work because Mike ignored the Hell out of something that she'd told him when he was filled with angst because of the love-letter he wanted to send her the year before. That fact that he'd failed to recall was that Mrs MacRae was in the habit of reading any letters that Martha might receive so as to protect her from predatory young boys and their urges. This, as I think I mentioned once before, means that Martha's parents were just as eager to cool things down as Elly was. That being said, it seems to your not-at-all humble servant that Elly judged them unfairly. Here they were playing abstinence cop and she thought that they all but encouraged her to ensnare Mike, cancel his destiny and keep his horses from being owned because they weren't inclined to make her dress like a Bulgarian cleaning lady. Since she wasn't allowed to speak the "language", as Elly so fatuously put it, it's not really important how she dressed.
