Family politics 103

To continue on with the current look at how helpless Mike and Liz are when faced with the simplest of life's challenges, it should be noted that the parents that Elly and John say play family politics did something that they did not: raise children who have coping skills that they'd rather not use. There is nothing aside from a baffling need to have a helpless Patterchild as a mate that ever kept Deanna or Anthony from making something of themselves so what we're faced with is the conclusion that the reason that Elly and John fear the prospect of Mike getting to like Mira is not just his realization that his horses need not be owned because parenting doesn't work that way, he might also start to realize how little they did and how proud they were of setting the bar so low that he needs to have his mother-in-law come in and tell him things that he should have learned back when he was being drafted to take care of his sister. Thus the need to fill heads with the bullshit story of family politics and thus the need to steer him away from girls with dangerous body language.
